The Friday 56 (88) & Book Beginnings: A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess

The Friday 56 is a weekly meme hosted by Freda's Voice where every Friday you pick a book and turn to page 56 or 56%, and select a sentence or a few, as long as it's not a spoiler. For the full rules, visit the the page HERE
Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader that asks you to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you're reading.
23203252Synopsis from Goodreads...

I am Henrietta Howel. The first female sorcerer. The prophesied one. Or am I?

Henrietta Howel can burst into flames. When she is brought to London to train with Her Majesty's sorcerers, she meets her fellow sorcerer trainees, young men eager to test her powers and her heart. One will challenge her. One will fight for her. One will betray her. As Henrietta discovers the secrets hiding behind the glamour of sorcerer life, she begins to doubt that she's the true prophesied one. With battle looming, how much will she risk to save the city--and the one she loves?
Beginning: "The Sorcerer arrived on a Saturday."

56:"Blackwood shook his head. His expression was cold. "We'll do our best, but with her background, I doubt she'll be capable."

My face felt flaming hot. I had to dig my fingers into the palms of my hands, lest the fire come upon me suddenly."
Comments: I actually like the beginning for this one. It didn't tell me much about the story, but it quickly got to the point. I read A Shadow Bright and Burning last week, and it was just alright.

What are you reading this week?

  2. I've been drooling over this cover since the first time I saw it, though I'm not sure I'll be picking it up myself at any point. I've heard pretty great things about it, but also pretty neutral things--like your "it's just alright" above. Which makes me a little leery on it. Also, I have SO MANY other books to read, I can't imagine picking up a read I'm not 100% excited for.

Thank you so much for sharing! Here's my Friday 56, if you're interested in checking it out--no worries or pressure if you're not, though! Either way, happy book-ing to you in the near future...and happy Friday! <3

    1. I had the same kind of reaction to this book. I saw the mixed reviews and wasn't sure about it. The copy I have was for review so I figured that I might as well give it a try. Thanks for stopping by! :D

    1. A Shadow Bright and Burning was just alright for me. I do want to see what's next for the characters, so there's a high possibility that I'll pick up book 2 in the series once it comes out. Thanks for stopping by! :-)

  10. I am pages from finishing a "just alright" book right now. I hate it when I waste time reading a book I end up not really liking. On to better books....

  12. The beginning is short and succinct. I guess I would have liked a bit more, but wanting to know more also would have kept me reading.
