About the book:
Collide by Melissa West (The Taking #3)
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Publication date: December 2, 2014

Military legacy Ari Alexander has survived alien spies, WWIV, and a changing world order. But when the new leader of Earth uses Jackson—the only boy she's ever let herself care about—to get to her, Ari has no choice but to surrender. To free Jackson, she agrees to travel to the national bases to train others to fight.

What she discovers is a land riddled with dying people. Ari has the power to heal by turning the fighters into aliens—half-breeds like her. If she succeeds, together, they have a chance at overthrowing the alien leader, Zeus. But if she fails, everyone she holds dear will be wiped away forever.

Once again, everything Ari’s come to believe is thrown into question. In a world of uncertainty, loyalties are tested, lies are uncovered, and no one can be trusted. If Ari and Jackson have any hope at survival and at preserving a life for the future, they must fight the final war with their eyes wide open.

“Wake up!”

I feel as though someone has pinched my mind, shaken my brain around, and asked it to work again. I try to open my eyes, but they’re heavy and clouded and I begin to worry that maybe they are open. I just can’t see.

“Wake up!”

I flinch at the sound, so close to my ear, yet far away. Or maybe it’s my understanding that’s far.

“Ari. We’re out of time. Wake up!”

My mind flashes into focus, but I don’t open my eyes. I can feel, sense, everything around me. The beeping sounds that alternate in succession. The breathing in and out of the person beside me, yet I can’t make out who the person is. Even if it’s a he or she. But what I can sense is danger, danger so intense that the hairs on my arms are at full attention and the xylem in my body has sparked, causing me to instantly want the person beside me dead. If he or she—it—is dead then I am free to escape, even if I have no idea what or who I am escaping from.

“Fine. Just call this payback.”

I have one second to realize that the person is Cybil, before a gut wrenching pain slices through my left arm. My eyes snap open and she’s in front of me, so pale and rattled that she looks like a ghost of herself. I glance down at my arm to see that Cybil ripped out my IV and is now holding it in her hand like a toy.

“I warned you. Look. This likely triggered an alarm. We have to get out of here. Right now.”

I try to nod, but my body is sluggish and I’m not sure that I’ve moved at all. Cybil loops her arm under my back to help me sit up, and instantly the room begins to move in and out of focus. “What happened to me?”

“They happened. Now move.”

I start to climb off the table I’m on, when Cybil’s eyes round out and her body begins to quake. “Cybil? What is it?” I reach out for her, just as her body collapses to the ground and a metal door behind her slides open. Two men dressed in thick white suits rush in, followed by a shorter man. A man I recognize.

“Hello, Ari. Nice to see you awake,” Kelvin says. Kelvin Lancaster. I remember him from the talks with Earth, how he seemed to be in control, how everyone around him acted uneasy in his presence. Like he was more enemy than friend. I start to respond to him, when I feel a sharp pinch in my arm. I look up to see another white-suited person behind me, syringe in hand. I try to push the person away. I try to open my mouth to scream. But suddenly my lips feel tingly, my arms limp. I focus back on Kelvin, on the grin on his face, and then the world around me disappears, and I’m once again alone in the darkness.

STONE COLD TOUCH Synopsis: Every touch has its price Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could. But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…
"Constantly entertaining...the narrative sizzles with as much tension as romance." Kirkus Reviews on White Hot Kiss
And...Don't forget to check out the first book in The Dark Elements Series, White Hot Kiss.

ABOUT WHITE HOT KISS:
One kiss could be the last. Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses. Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever. Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul. But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

ARC Review: Fire & Flood by Victoria Scott

Fire & Flood (Fire & Flood, #1)Title: Fire & Flood
Author: Victoria Scott
Age Range: YA
Source/Format: Publisher (Scholastic Press), Bound ARC
Publisher/Publication Date: Scholastic Press, February 25, 2014
Links
Goodreads   Amazon  Barnes & Noble

Summary from Goodreads:

Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can't determine what's wrong, her parents decide to move to Montana for the fresh air. She's lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying—and she's helpless to change anything.

Until she receives mysterious instructions on how to become a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed. It's an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother's illness. But all the Contenders are after the Cure for people they love, and there's no guarantee that Tella (or any of them) will survive the race. Read more here

My Thoughts:

Ok, stop the boat. Let me lie down so I can get my thoughts in order. If you’re a fan of Victoria Scott’s writing then you’re in for a real treat. Fire and Flood was absolutely amazing and by far one of the best books I've read this year. I liked everything from the characters, to the Pandora’s, and even the whole premise of the Brimstone Bleed and the circumstances surrounding it. To say that I liked this book wouldn't be accurate, I absolutely loved this book, would be more like it.

Fire & Flood sported a whole host of interesting characters, from the MC to the secondary characters, each one was unique, and fleshed out with such precision and expertise that there was never a dull moment to be found. Fire & Flood focuses on Tella Holloway and her journey through the Brimstone Bleed, a race that could land her the cure for her brothers’ illness. But the race is not without danger, nor is it what it seems, it is essentially a test of one’s survival skills. I liked Tella well enough, and I could understand why she took the risk she did—her family was important to her after all. Tella was aided throughout the story by her adorable Pandora with a surprising talent. Overall, I felt like all of the Pandora's were a good addition to the story and kept the plot going at a steady pace. One thing I liked about the characters in Fire & Flood was that they all had a different story to tell, which I thought made the book all that more interesting. Guy was a mystery, he just held so many secrets throughout the book that I had a hard time trying to figure out if he was to be trusted or not. And when he finally revealed those secrets I felt like it provided a nice twist and some clarification on what was really going on. I’d love to go on and on about all the characters I liked and why I liked them, but then this review would never end, so, moving on.

The plot, oh goodness, the plot. Its kind of one of those cases where things are revealed slowly and at the right time. The plot moved along quickly with the race starting off with a few minor complications, but once everything got started I had a hard time putting the book down. Rarely am I ever compelled—lately anyway—to finish a book in one sitting, but not with Fire and Flood. I had questions, lots of them and most of them happened to do with the Brimstone Bleed itself. Like why it was created, how did they have the cure Tella was looking for, and so on and so on. Some of those questioned were answered in Fire & Flood, but the race isn't over yet. So I'm really looking forward to seeing what Scott has planned next for this series. Overall, I really enjoyed this book! As for the sequel—and there has to be one—I can’t wait to read it. So to end this review: five freaking birdcages, because I absolutely loved it.
This ARC was provided by the publisher (Scholastic Press) in exchange for an honest review, thank you!

Spotlight, Q&A & Giveaway: Killer Frost by Jennifer Estep

Today Jennifer Estep is stopping by Our Thoughts Precisely for a Q&A, and if you keep reading there's a Giveaway at the bottom of the post.  Killer Frost is the last book in the Mythos Academy series by Jennifer Estep, but before we get to the good stuff, first a little bit about the book.
Coming from Kensington Books February 25, 2014
Killer Frost by Jennifer Estep

Summary From Goodreads
I’ve battled the Reapers of Chaos before–and survived. But this time I have a Bad, Bad Feeling it’s going to be a fight to the death … most likely mine.
Yeah, I’ve got my psychometry magic, my talking sword, Vic–and even the most dangerous Spartan on campus at my side, in Logan freaking Quinn, but I’m no match for Loki, the evil Norse god of chaos. I may be Nike’s Champion, but at heart, I’m still just Gwen Frost, that weird girl everyone at school loves to gossip about. Read More Here

Don't forget to visit Jennifer Estep!

Breana:  First off, a big thank you to Jennifer Estep for stopping by today to do a Q&A.! So I know Killer Frost is the last book in your Mythos Academy Series.  *cue sad face* Would you ever revisit the world with another series, possibly a spinoff spotlighting other characters from the same universe?

JE: Thanks for hosting me on your blog. I appreciate it. Yes, Killer Frost will be the sixth and last book in my Mythos Academy series, out on Feb. 25. I've thought about going back to the Mythos Academy world or doing a spinoff series. If I have an idea that really interests me and something that I think would work well with Gwen or perhaps even another character, I might write another Mythos Academy book or a spinoff series someday. But for right now, Gwen’s story is finished. So we’ll see what happens.

Breana: I noticed that there aren’t a lot of YA books centered solely around the holiday season.  Would you ever write a YA novel for a specific holiday season?  Which holiday would it be, and why?

JE: I think it would be fun to write a holiday-themed book. As for what holiday I would pick, it would just depend on the characters, magic, world, and what sort of idea I came up with. I haven’t specifically written a holiday book, although I have mentioned various holidays in my Mythos Academy series. Kiss of Frost, book #2, is set during December, and there are mentions of Christmas and the holiday season. In Killer Frost, book #6, I mention Valentine’s Day.
Breana: To date, what is the longest book you’ve ever written?
JE: I don’t know exactly which book is the longest, but all of the books in my Elemental Assassin urban fantasy series are about 100,000 words long. The books in my Mythos Academy series are about 85,000 to 90,000 words long.
Breana: Do you prefer paperback or digital books?
JE: I like them both. I recently got an e-reader, so I definitely see the appeal of being able to download a book and start reading it a minute later. Plus, downloading e-books, especially when they are on sale, is totally addictive. LOL. But I still read paper books too. I like the physical feel of holding a book in my hand, being able to flip back and forth through the pages, and things like that. So I’ll continue to read both e-books and paper books.
Breana: In a year, how many books do you typically write?
JE: I would say that I typically write about three to four books a year, along with some short stories/novellas. From 2010 to the end of 2013, I wrote/released 10 books in my Elemental Assassin series; 5 books in my Mythos Academy series; and several short stories and e-novellas.
Breana: What’s next for you on the Young Adult end, after Killer Frost is released?
JE: Killer Frost is the last book in my Mythos Academy series, so I hope that readers enjoy the finale to Gwen’s story. Right now, I’m mulling over ideas for some new series, for both young adult and adult books. We’ll see what I come up with.
Breana: How well do you do with Deadlines?  Have you ever missed one, or are you always on time?

JE: Deadlines motivate me to meet my goals, and I always try to meet them, if not get a book/project done before it’s due.

Quick Questions:
What's your favorite part about the holiday season?

JE: I always enjoy decorating my Christmas tree.

Favorite dessert?

JE: Oh, that’s a tough one! But strawberry cheesecake ice cream is one of my favorites.

Favorite place to write?

JE: In my office.

Favorite book from 2013?

JE: Some of my favorite reads from 2013 were Also Known As by Robin Benway; Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry; and Poison by Bridget Zinn.

Favorite TV show/ Movie from 2013?

JE: I’m really enjoying Reign and The Blacklist as far as new TV shows go.
Happy reading, everyone!

Breana: Thanks again to Jennifer Estep for stopping by! Don't forget to check out the Mythos Academy Series especially the final book Killer Frost when it comes out. In the meantime keep reading to find out how you could win a finished copy.

ARC Review: The Winners Curse by Marie Rutkoski

The Winner's Curse (Winner's Trilogy #1)Title:The Winner's Curse
Author: Marie Rutkoski
Source/Formate: Goodreads, Bound ARC
Age Range: YA
Publisher/Publication Date: Farrar Straus Giroux, March 14, 2014

My Thoughts:

Today I'm going to keep this kind of short, so rest assured there won't be any angry rants ahead. *Warning there will be...nope, kidding, there aren't any spoilers ahead so continue on.
The Winners Curse was the first YA book I’ve picked up in a while, and all I have to say is that I’m really disappointed.  While the synopsis sounded mildly interesting, once I started reading I found that I couldn’t get into this book.  It wasn’t for me, at all.  And you know what?  The writing style wasn't even an issue at all.  My problems began with the opening chapter, it didn’t captivate me, and it certainly didn’t draw me into the story.  I was more or less indifferent towards it, and unfortunately I found myself leaning more towards dislike.  I didn’t like the concept of the slaves at all, nor did I like the initial setting of the slave market.  And Kestrel, oh gosh, what to say?  She was just another YA heroine that I’ve seen so many times already that just…blahjust another cookie in the giant jar filled with them. This book, from what I read of it, left a bad taste in my mouth.  While it might not have been a fit for me, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t check it out if it’s something that interests you.  But sadly for me, this will probably be the only thing I’ll ever read by Marie Rutkoski.

This Bound ARC was won through Goodreads First Reads, thank you!

Pardon us...

Hello, it seems to be that time again. While not everything will be changing, the header has received a bit of a redesign, blue, with a birdcage and a bird. I mean, it has to have a bird right? Right? Ok, anyway, the rating art you can find at the bottom of most posts, specifically reviews, has also changed…drastically.  But in my defense the tree didn’t really fit much with the newish theme—sorry tree, you have served me well.  Anyhow, I thought a key, kind of vintage in style, would fit a little better.  The new rating art can be found on the about page.  So, pardon us while we tinker with the blog…

About THE FINE ART OF PRETENDING
Release Date: September 30, 2014
Author: Rachel Harris

According to the guys at Fairfield Academy, there are two types of girls: the kind you hook up with, and the kind you're friends with. Seventeen-year-old Alyssa Reed is the second type. And she hates it. With just one year left to change her rank, she devises a plan to become the first type by homecoming, and she sets her sights on the perfect date—Justin Carter, Fairfield Academy’s biggest hottie and most notorious player.

With 57 days until the dance, Aly launches Operation Sex Appeal and sheds her tomboy image. The only thing left is for Justin actually to notice her. Enter best friend Brandon Taylor, the school’s second biggest hottie, and now Aly’s pretend boyfriend. With his help, elevating from “funny friend” to “tempting vixen” is only a matter of time.

But when everything goes according to plan, the inevitable “break up” leaves their friendship in shambles, and Aly and Brandon with feelings they can’t explain. And the fake couple discovers pretending can sometimes cost you the one thing you never expected to want.
