My Musings for the Week...

This week for Musing Monday's I'm going to share a few of the book trailers I've come across. I did a few posts like this last year as well (Part 1 & Part 2), and I thought I would do it again. I guess you could say that this is sort of like a part three to the other two. Basically, there's one trailer that I want to share. Lets get started.

The Tapper Twins Go to War (With Each Other)The Tapper Twins Go to War (With Each Other) by Geoff Rodkey This book releases April 7, 2015, but you can check out the website now: CLICK HERE

Summary from Goodreads...

A contemporary comedy featuring twelve-year-old fraternal twins, Claudia and Reese, who couldn't be more different...except in their determination to come out on top in a vicious prank war! But when the competition escalates into an all-out battle that's fought from the cafeteria of their New York City private school all the way to the fictional universe of an online video game, the twins have to decide if their efforts to destroy each other are worth the price...

So that's basically it.  Maybe I'll do another post later like this one later on, it just depends.

What are you reading this week? Or, what are some of your favorite book trailers?

My Musings for the Week....

This week I'm going to be answering the random weekly question: Do you enjoy debating / discussing the books that others are currently reading? Why, or why not?

My answer to this is going to be short. No, I don't enjoy debating/discussing the books that others are currently reading, because I think they should form their own opinion about it—especially if I've already read the book.  I don't want my opinion influencing how they view the book.  If they enjoy it, then they just do.  And if not, they're perfectly entitled to have that opinion. So once they do finish then we can have a discussion about it, even if our opinions differ.

More about the book (Summary from Goodreads)...

On Earth, seventeen-year-old Ari Alexander was taught to never peek, but if she hopes to survive life on her new planet, Loge, her eyes must never shut. Because in this world, pleasure is everything, held up by a ruling body that keeps their people in check by giving them what they want and closing their eyes to what's really happening around them. The only hope Loge has is to move its people to Earth, and they have a plan.

Thousands of humans crossed over to Loge after a poisonous neurotoxin released into Earth’s atmosphere, nearly killing them. They sought refuge in hopes of finding a new life, but what they became were slaves, built to wage war against their home planet. That is, unless Ari and Jackson can stop them. But on Loge, nothing is as it seems…and no one can be trusted...

My Musings for the Week...
Finding Serendipity
This week I'm going to share a bit about the book I'm currently reading. I literally just started an ARC of Finding Serendipity by Angelica Banks. This is a middle grade novel that was released on February 3, 2015.

Goodreads     Amazon     Barnes & Noble     Book Depository

More about the book (Summary from Goodreads)...

Here, Tuesday befriends the fearless Vivienne Small, learns to sail an enchanted boat, tangles with an evil pirate, and discovers the truth about her remarkable dog. Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, that asks you to muse about something book related each week. **There are a new list of prompts for Musing Mondays**

My Musings for the week...

Today I'm going to be answering the random weekly question: Give a list of 4 books you read last year that you’d recommend to others — and why.

Double Vision: The Alias Men
Double Vision: Alias Men by F.T. Bradley. Really, the entire middle grade trilogy was fantastic and I would recommend it to just about anyone!
Mistborn: The Final Empire
Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. Oh gosh, there’s a lot of things I really liked about this book, the writing style, the world building, and the characters combined with the interesting magic system. I think a lot of people would like this one, which is why I recommend it.

Courting Magic (Kat, Incorrigible, #3.5)The Archived (The Archived, #1)Courting Magic by Stephanie Burgis. Ok, I know this one isn’t a full length novel, but I recommend it as well as the books that go along with it—it was another really good middle grade series that I enjoyed.

The Archived by Victoria Schwab. I really liked this book. It has an interesting premise, plenty of mystery surrounding the Archive, and plenty of interesting characters.

There are a lot of other books that I recommend, but listing them all would make this post too long. Happy reading!

My Musings for the week...

Random weekly question: Has any author ever had a huge influence on your reading? Who, and why?

I don't think any one author had a huge influence on my reading. However, recently I have to say that Brandon Sanderson got me interested in fantasy again. His writing style has a way of drawing me into the story.

On another note...

So, I started to think about all of the books I’m waiting for this year, and I realized there weren't that many. I thought there were more at first…but I guess not. There are a few older books I want to read, but for the most part my list of new releases is relatively small—like REALLY small.

  • Cold Burn of Magic by Jennifer Estep
  • Salt & Stone by Victoria Scott
  • Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray

That’s it, I’m not kidding. There might be some other fictional books that catch my interest later this year, but for now those are the only ones I’m really waiting for. Of course I'll be searching for more nonfiction books to read.

Question: What books are you waiting for in 2015? Are there any books that you recommend? I'd love to hear your suggestions.

Musing Mondays (16)

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, that asks you to muse about something book related each week.

My Musings for the week...

This is the first Musing Mondays post of 2015, hooray! As you can see above I changed the old banner during my vacation so that it matched with the header of Our Thoughts Precisely—and it was missing a dash of blue. So, for this Musing Monday’s I'm going to briefly discuss the Goodreads Reading Challenge. So what is it? Basically, you can set a goal on Goodreads pertaining to the amount of books you want to read in a year, as a sort of challenge for yourself.

Will I participate in the Goodreads Reading Challenge?

No, I won’t be participating in the Reading Challenge this year. I’ve never done so, and I don’t think I ever will.

     Why not?

I think the simple reason is that I read a random number of books each year—and setting a goal won’t help with that. When I read, it solely depends on what I feel like doing at the time.  For me, I almost feel like I would get through books considerably slower if I set a goal with a specific number, because my enthusiasm wouldn't be there.  As you can see with my 2015: Blogger Resolutions post, all of my goals for the year are pretty open ended.  There's no specific amount for any of them.  They are relatively flexible goals.

Any final thoughts on the Goodreads Reading Challenge?

I think the challenge is good for some people and not for others. For me, well, I’m on the not-so-much side.

Question: What are your thoughts on the Goodreads Reading Challenge? Does setting a goal help you read more or less?

*Check back next Monday for my list of Most Anticipated 2015 New Releases. (Hint: It's going to be short.)

Musing Mondays (15)

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, that asks you to muse about something book related each week.

My Musings for the Week...

I thought I would answer 3 questions for Musing Mondays this week.  Well here goes:

     Long books or short books?

I will admit that I like longer books and don't mind an abundance of detail either.  I like when the world within the book is thoroughly explained.  I prefer long epic tales and usually look to read them first.  However, despite my love of lengthy novels, I occasionally enjoy a shorter one.  So, I guess you can say that I enjoy all kinds of books--long or short depending on how much time I have to read.

     Standalone or series?

Both.  I like long series because it gives me time to get invested in the characters and the overall story.  But at the same time I also like standalones where the story is nicely wrapped up into one book.

Do book covers matter when deciding on what book to buy?

Covers are just covers in my opinion.  I care more about the story rather than anything else.  So I try not to buy books based off the cover alone.

Well that's it for today.  Basically, books are books. It doesn't matter if they're long or short, series or standalones, as long as the stories are great.  I try not to judge just by the cover, because it could look pretty, but the story might not be so great.  Question: Standalone or series? Long books, short books, or both? Do nice book cover's play a part in if you buy a book or not?

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, that asks you to muse about something book related each week.

My Musings for the Week:

Wow, it's Monday already. And where the heck did November go?  I don't know, it just seems like the month passed by too quickly.  It's already December which means that the year is almost over. Seriously, where did the time go?
Well, I hope that everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I did a little shopping over the weekend, and I thought I would share some of my purchases.  I actually bought a few DVDs, which is one thing I normally don't do.  I picked up The Lego Movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Sherlock, and Pacific Rim. There was a really good sale on them, so I just had to get them.  And lastly, I picked up a few books from the Book Outlet: The Keep by Veronica Wolff & The Bone Season.  I'm really excited to read both.  So that's basically it, as I said I did "a little shopping" as in, not a lot.  Question: Did you take advantage of any of the sales going on over the weekend?

My Musings for the Week:

I haven't done a Musing Mondays in a while, so here's one for today.  Since I want to keep this simple, I thought I might do something a little different. So I thought book quotes that I would want as bookish jewelry would be a fun topic. There are so many quotes that I've come across that I absolutely love, but here's just three I would want as jewelry in my jewelry box.

1) Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll: ""Would you tell me, please," said Alice, a little timidly, "why you are painting those roses?""
2) The Rithematist by Brandon Sanderson: ""You'll deal with unicorns--maybe some flower people and a Pegasus or two-- and you'll like it.""
3) Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld: "Though we find the comparison to cats a bit infuriating, don't we Tazza?"

Those are my three quotes, but there are many more.  Which quotes would you want on a piece of your jewelry?

Cold Burn of Magic (Black Blade #1)Since I want to keep it short today, this week I'm sharing another book I'm waiting for: Cold Burn of Magic by Jennifer Estep. After reading the final book in the Mythos Academy series I have to say that I'm really looking forward to this one.

Question: what books are you desperately waiting for?

My Musings for the Week...

So I thought I would do something a little different today by talking about how my reviews come together, and a bit about how Our Thoughts Precisely works. First, are the reviews. Of course I have to read the books before I can even get to the review.  Once I've read the book I usually write the review in one sitting, and the length usually depends on how much I have to say about the book.  So the review could be long or short, but not based on if I enjoyed the book or not.  I could love the book, but feel like I can't say much without spoiling everything so the review would be shorter, or I could hate the book and have a lot to say on it.  It also works vice-versa.  Once the draft of the review is done I look over it for possible spoilers that might have made it in.  Once all is said and done, the reviews are posted.

I review in no particular order, its just sort of random depending on what I do or don't want to read.  If I have review copies from the publisher I make them a priority, meaning they go first, usually.  I post when I want sometimes twice or more a week, sometimes less. It just depends, because balancing blogging with life is an important thing. In other words I've still got other things to do so blogging has fallen into my free time. Promotional post go up on the specified dates so there's nothing much to say on them.  All in all, my posts sometimes tend to be a little sporadic depending on what I'm doing at the time, or if I feel like blogging at all.

Do I have someone working on the design of the blog?  Ha, ha, nope. I work on the design myself, that includes the header, background, the occasional arrows, and rating graphics. Would I considering hiring someone to do it for me?  No again. I like working on things for the blog, specifically the art.  For instance, the previous header I made was nice, but then I noticed something wrong with it later and I decided to scrap it for an entirely new look. With as many times as I want to change things, if I had to hire someone each time I would probably be broke by now.

So that's it, a brief look into the things that happen behind the scenes at Our Thoughts Precisely.  If given the choice between making your own blog art and hiring someone else to do it, which would you choose?

My Musings for the Week...

So picking up from last week, I'm going to continue with Part 2 of my book trailers discussions.  First up is the creepiest YA book trailer I've come across so far. And that goes to The Diviners by Libba Bray.  Everything about this book trailer is creepy but it definitely fits with the book. I've read this one, loved it, and definitely recommend it.

And since I couldn't just pick one creepy book trailer, here is the one from Lockwood & Co.: The Screaming Staircase by Jonathan  Stroud.

I haven't read Seraphina by Rachel Hartman but it seems interesting and the trailer is nice.

Alright, moving on. Next are the Nightmares by Jason Segel & Kirsten Miller, there are three of them but I'm only going to post one here. I really love these since I'm a sucker for animated trailers. Link for trailer #1   Link for trailer #2

So that's all for the book trailers. There are plenty more out there but these were just a few of my favorites. Since I already asked about the favorite book trailers last week I'm just going to go for something different.  What are you reading this week?

My Musings for the Week...

This is not going to be a short one...oh well, I'm just going to break it down into two parts. So here is part one. With book releases comes book trailers as a way to entice readers into wanting to read an upcoming release. I'm not judging the books based off the trailer, just the trailer itself.  Some of them go with books I've read and some of them no. (I even have a few of them on my shelf that I just haven't read yet.) Ok, so with that out of the way lets get started.  I like book trailers, they're interesting, and some of them pretty much sum up the books in question and serve as a way to pique my interest.  Since this is going to be a cheerful post, I thought I'd share a few of my favorite book trailers that I've come across at various times.  First up is the Leviathan Trilogy trailer for book one Leviathan.  I like the animation and the overall look for it.  And the part at the end always gets me, "Do you oil your war machines? Or do you feed them?" It's just so catchy.

Ok, now these two are for Gail Carriger's YA novels Etiquette & Espionage and Curtsies & Conspiracies. I adore the whimsical theme of the trailers. The themes are just awesome.

This next trailer is for one I haven't read but is sitting on my shelf. It's pretty cool, and it does grab my interest. The song is Fly on the Windscreen by Ane Brun & Vince Clarke, which is available on iTunes.

As Dead As It Gets, I haven't even read any of the books, but just by seeing the trailer I'm interested. Like THIS trailer from From Bad to Cursed or the one from Bad Girls Don't Die.

So that's all for Part 1, but check back next Monday for Part 2.  I'm also going to reveal which trailer I find to be the creepiest one I've ever seen. So I'll leave all of you with a question: What are some of your favorite book trailers?

My Musings for the Week...

Today is truly going to be a random sort of post. Don't worry, it's about books...um, I guess. Anyway, here goes nothing. You just don't know how badly I want it to be October. No, its not because Halloween either, I'm talking about the 1st of October, because that's when Gotham Academy by Karl Kerschl, Brenden Fletcher, and Becky Cloonan comes out. I repeat: I WANT THIS COMIC SO BADLY.
I mean look at the characters. LOOK
     AT THIS TOO
     THIS
     THIS

     & THIS
And I don't normally use caps lock in posts, but this is something I just felt the need to share. So yeah, October 1st. I don't normally talk about comics on Our Thoughts Precisely, but I might, because I am so excited for this.  So, have you guys heard of Gotham Academy?  Do you plan on checking it out? And, what are some of your favorite comics? (If you have any.) Leave your recommendations in the comments.

My Musings for the Week...

This week I want to discuss items with bookish themes & book quotes, or just things in general that appeal to readers. Recently I purchased a new sketch book with Oscar Wilde quotes on it, and I have to say that I love it. There are a lot of items out there that are book themed from T-Shirts, to notebooks, and even cases for phones, iPads, Kindles, Nooks, etc. And not to forget tote bags. I actually really like the availability of items with book covers or themes on them.  Bookmarks are always a great thing and I especially like the "Initial It! Bookmark" that I recently picked up from Barnes & Noble. (I got the one with the white cupcake that says "Sweet" on the bottom.)
So among  the tote bags, bookmarks, notebooks, accessories, etc., what are some of your favorite bookish themed items/things that appeal to readers?

My Musings for the Week...

Multiple points of view can be a good thing.  I personally like to see what's happening through the eyes of more than one character beyond the view of the MC. But, that can also present a bit of a problem especially when the voices sound so similar that the POVs start to blend together, making it difficult to distinguish which character is which.  Sometimes the characters can even introduce more subplots and make the story start to feel a little cluttered, but that's not always the case.  Personally, I prefer to to read multiple POVs in third person.  Some great books/series that contain multiple points of view:

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. I do enjoy the various points of view throughout all of the current books. (Cinder, Scarlet, & Cress.)

Crystal Fire by Jordan Dane, with the different POVs from the crystal children and the slightly-insane-although-they-think-they're-sane scientist of the Believers. (I haven't reviewed this one yet.)

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, with the views from the different memebers of the crew, especially Vin herself.

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, Raven Boys, a girl named Blue, shenanigans...you get it.

Leviathan Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld. I especially like how this series was done, with points of view from the Clanker side of the war and the Darwinist side. The blatant differences between the beliefs of the two sides was interesting to watch unfold as the two main characters interacted with one another.

Daughter of Smoke & Bone Trilogy by Laini Taylor...there's just so much to like about this series. But the varying points of view make the story that much wider, giving a look into the different sides of the war.

I'm sure there are plenty of other great books out there that I missed that have multiple points of view.  I either haven't read them or just forgot about them.  But what about you guys, how do you feel about multiple points of view?  Or, what are some of your favorite reads with multiple POVs?

Fairest (The Lunar Chronicles, #3.5)So this week for Musing Mondays I'm talking about a book I'm desperate to get my hands on since I want to keep it short today.  As you can tell by the picture to the left the book I'm waiting for is Fairest by Marissa Meyer! I mean, come on, it's a novel about Levana's back story, maybe we'll finally get some answers surrounding the evil queen. Who doesn't want that?

Well that's all for today, but what books are you desperately waiting for?

Musing Mondays (3)

Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB at Should Be Reading, that asks you to muse about one of the following each week:
• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.
• Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
• Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books — let’s hear it, then!

My Musings for the week...
I'm going to keep this kind of short today, but lets talk briefly about books with illustrations. Sometimes I do like books that have small illustrations in them, because it gives me a sense of what the characters and settings really look like beyond what my imagination came up with. (They also come in handy when small, intricate details like symbols, some pieces of complicated jewelry worn by the characters, etc aren't really explained.) Some great examples of books with illustrations in them are: The Leviathan Trilogy by Scott Westerfeld, The Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson, The League of Princes Trilogy by Christopher Healy, *shuffles through books*...hmmm I don't seem to have many young adult ones, but plenty of middle grade ones. Anyway, what about you guys?  What are your thoughts on books with illustrations, young adult or otherwise?
